As part of an effort to create more awareness of the scourge of Breast Cancer within communities and commemorate this year’s October Cancer Month, a coalition of Bauchi-based Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have on Sunday hampered on the need for early detection of breast cancer to prevent deaths among women.

The Breast Cancer Awareness was organized by three CSOs in Bauchi State, namely: Alheri YS Foundation, AABA Life Foundation (ALFO), and Barrister Ibrahim Kashim (BIK) Foundation.

While addressing a heavily built crowd at the event, a consultant with the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Dr. Adamu Bala Ningi, lamented over the percentage of deaths from breast cancer in Africa, which he attributed to the late detection of the scourge.

He said that most often the patient comes to the hospital when the cancer has already spread, and eventually it leads to death even after surgery.

In an interview with Miss Alheri Yusuf Sarauta, one of the organizers of the event and founder of Alheri YS Foundation; she said that the objective of commemorating breast cancer month was to bring to the limelight the need for women to always seek medical attention the moment they notice anomalies in their breast.

She also disputes the myth that breast cancer cannot be cured, stressing that early detection and prevention was the only way to survive the disease.

“There are many survivors of breast cancer that are hale and hearty within our community. This was a result of the fact that the breast cancer was detected early enough by the victims and commenced medical treatment” She said

For the first time, the Coalition of CSOs saw the need to commemorate October Cancer Month with a grand walk of over 3 kilometres across major streets of the Bauchi metropolis, in addition to a series of public lectures.

The State Governor Bala Mohammed while receiving the placard-carrying crowd that terminated the walk at the Government House Bauchi, commended the effort of the CSOs, for the first-ever awareness walk on breast cancer in the State describing it as historic.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Ibrahim Kashim, the Governor expressed his appreciation for the thoughtfulness of the Youth in organizing the breast cancer awareness campaign, saying that the state government is committed to ensuring effective and efficient healthcare services in the State.
