In a bid to curb the increased use of drugs amongst youths, the Rivers State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has cautioned youths in Rivers State against the use of illicit drugs.

The Assistant State Commander, Drug Demand Reduction Unit of the agency Mrs. Stella-Maris Amede, gave the word of caution while speaking as a resource person in a one-day sensitization campaign against drug abuse and other social vices, organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in conjunction with Victoria Archibong Educational Foundation.

Mrs. Amede who spoke extensively at the event said youths indulge in drugs and smoking from experimentation and peer group influences. She, therefore, advised parents and adults to set good examples for the young ones by living exemplary lives.

She enumerated some illicit drugs and the dangers associated with their usage, while advising the students at the occasion to only attend events organized by people they know; and desist from consuming any special refreshments at events.

The one-day sensitization campaign with the theme: “The Dangers of Drug Abuse and Cultism”, is part of efforts by the NDDC to help curb the abuse of drugs and restore some level of sanity in the youths of the Niger Delta region.

The event had in attendance the NDDC Acting Managing Director, Engr. Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, who was represented by the Commission’s Director, Human Resources, Dr.  Alazigha Woyengibaragha; Rivers State director of NDDC,  53 students from select secondary schools in Rivers State, teachers, among others.
