RIVERS NUJ FEDERAL INFORMATION CHAPEL GETS NEW EXCO

...elects first all-female Chapel executives
The
Federal Information Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers
State Council on Monday 22nd July, 2024 elected new executive members to run
the affairs of the chapel for the next three years.
They
are: Dr. Helen Nsirim (Chairman), Ikodiya Ogwo (Vice Chairman), Ikata Mesel
(Secretary), Doris Dogini (Assistant Secretary), Hope Nwachukwu (Financial
Secretary), Soyoye Risqat Kikelomo (Treasurer), and Chinwe Okpokiri (Auditor).
The
Rivers State NUJ Council Chairman, Comrade Stanley Job Stanley, after
inaugurating the Chapel executives, urged them to promote the objectives of the
NUJ in line with the constitutional stipulations.
He
noted that for the first time he is inaugurating an all-female Chapel
executives. He then encouraged them to attend meetings and events of the State
Council so they can be more visible to members of the State Council, and also
have the moral justification to admonish their Chapel members to attend
meetings.
He
said the Chapel should keep the harmonious relationship with the State Council,
pushing for improved welfare of members. In his words; "The essence of
unionism is welfarism."
Earlier speaking at the event, the
Head of the Federal Information Centre, Port Harcourt, Gabriel Obokuru in his
opening remark thanked the State Council executives for coming to inaugurate
new executives for the Chapel, while promising support for the new Chapel
executives.
On her part, the newly elected
Chairman of the Chapel, Dr Helen Nsirim while giving her acceptance speech
assured the Rivers State Council of the NUJ that her administration will
champion the objectives of the NUJ,
and staff welfare in terms of capacity building will be the focal point.
"You will agree with me that
Artificial Intelligence is gradually taking over the role of journalists and
information managers, nevertheless, it is worthy to note that we humans are the
Real Intelligence. So we have to emerge, so as not to be submerged.
"As
the Real Intelligence, we ought to have a firm grasp of our foundation, so we
can build on new knowledge, to stay relevant in an ever changing world like
ours," she said.
She further disclosed that from time to time, mini seminars will be taking place in the chapel, and the leadership of the NUJ Rivers State Council will be occasionally invited to attend.
She however decried the lack of
funds challenge that has bedevilled the Chapel, and expressed optimism that the
Rivers NUJ leadership will assist the Chapel in resolving the challenge.
